Fifty-three Stations of the Fan

In 1863, Tokugawa Iemochi, the 14th shogun of the Edo shogunate, traveled to Kyoto for the first time in 229 years—the first such journey since the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu. He did so to formally express to Emperor Komei his intention to open Japan to the outside world. The sight of his procession, accompanied by more than 3,000 armed retainers, caused a sensation in the final years of the Edo period. Scenes of the procession were also depicted in contemporary Tokaido prints, which came to be known as the Gojoraku Tokaido.
This series is one of them. It was produced collaboratively by artists including Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, Ochiai Yoshiiku, Utagawa Sadahide, Utagawa Hiroshige II, Toyohara Kunichika, Utagawa Yoshimori, Utagawa Kunisada II, and Utagawa Kuniteru II, each contributing different prints to the series. The series was published in 1865.
